Competition Purpose
To cultivate students’ oral expression skills and enhance their Hakka language proficiency through the Hakka reading competition. Simultaneously, this competition integrates The Program of Hakka Language and Culture, encouraging students to actively use Hakka and improve their Hakka learning motivation and effectiveness.

Eligibility
Currently enrolled students of the National Taiwan University System (National Taiwan Normal University, National Taiwan University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology) in the first semester of the 113 academic year are eligible to participate.

Competition Location
Classrooms at the main campus of National Taiwan Normal University. The detailed location will be announced in subsequent notices.
Registration Method
Fill out the Registration form (open in a new window) and upload the required attachments. After the organizer reviews the qualifications, a registration confirmation email will be sent within three days. Please check your email regularly.
Competition Rules
1. Competition categories:
Hakka Language Reading: Including Sixian, Southern Sixian, Hailu, Dabu, Raoping, and Zhao’an dialects. (Please select your dialect when registering.)
2. Competition Time Limit, Content Scope, and Judging Criteria:
Time Limit: 4 minutes for reading.
Content Scope: The content of the passages will be announced in advance (Hakka Reading Script (open in a new window), and each contestant will draw their competition passage 8 minutes before their performance.
Judging Criteria:
Pronunciation (pronunciation and tones): 45%
Expression (intonation, tone): 45%
Stage Presence (appearance, attitude, expression): 10%
The Hakka Phonetic Alphabet is based on the “Hakka Phonetic Alphabet Scheme” amended and announced by the Ministry of Education on September 12, 101 (Republic of China calendar). For details, please refer to: User Manual for the Taiwan Hakka Romanization System (open in a new window).
3. Competition Notes:
- Contestants must report and be seated within the specified time.
- When the contestant hears the call, they should immediately leave their seat to draw a question from the staff. After drawing the question and receiving the manuscript, they should take a seat in the preparation area. No talking is allowed, otherwise 1 point will be deducted from the total score.
- The preparation time after drawing the question is 8 minutes.
- Before going on stage, contestants should place their personal belongings in their original preparation seat and retrieve them after the performance as instructed by the staff.
- Contestants can add notes to the reading script they drew. When reading on stage, they must use the reading script distributed by the organizer and cannot use their own reading script. Violators will receive a zero score.
- Contestants should prepare to go on stage when they hear the call. Reading begins when they start speaking. If they do not go on stage after 3 calls or do not start within 1 minute after taking their position, they will be considered to have forfeited the competition.
- The reading time is 4 minutes. The timer starts when the contestant starts speaking. When the time is up, a bell will ring once (short sound), and the contestant should immediately leave the stage and return the reading script to the staff.
Awards
Special Excellence: One winner, NT$5,000 and a certificate.
Excellence: One winner, NT$3,000 and a certificate.
Honorable Mention: One winner, NT$2,000 and a certificate.
(Note: All participants who register and attend the competition will receive a certificate of participation; awards may be withheld or not fully awarded if the standard is not met.)
Supplementary Provisions
Participants should carefully read the competition rules before registering.
The registration information must be true and accurate. Impersonating or stealing information from a third party is illegal. If the information is incomplete or incorrect, resulting in the inability to contact or send relevant information, the participant will be deemed to have waived their participation and award eligibility. The organizer will not notify them separately or be held liable.
The audiovisual, image, copyright, and portrait rights of the contestants belong to the organizer. The organizer can use the relevant information for exhibitions, promotional photography, publications, etc. Contestants cannot charge any fees for this. When registering, they should fill out the audiovisual, image, copyright, and portrait rights transfer consent form in the registration form.
The organizer reserves the right to change and modify the event. In the event of a major natural disaster or force majeure, the organizer may decide to postpone the event.
If there are any unmentioned matters, the organizer reserves the right to modify and adjust the competition rules as needed. Any changes will be announced on the college’s website without further notice.
